This International Yoga Day, elevate the décor of your yoga space
The moment we visualize a yoga studio or a personal yoga room, the first thing that comes to our mind is serenity and calmness. But during my initial days of practice, whenever I tried to meditate, my mind wandered. Some burning issue at the workplace or an unfinished task at home. After some research and a few discussions with my peers, I realised that it is my yoga room that needs some modifications. Remember, in olden days, the traditional gurukuls used to be away from the hustle bustle of towns, and inside jungles or on river banks? That might not be possible in modern times. However, some improvement can surely be made within limited scope.
Your yoga space isn’t just a corner of your home; it’s the physical manifestation of your commitment to inner peace. When designed thoughtfully, it becomes a sanctuary that practically whispers “namaste” the moment you enter. Here are some simple tips.
Understand the Purpose of Your Yoga Space
Before you start designing your yoga room/ space, define your personal yoga goals. Is it primarily to challenge yourself physically? Are you doing it for stress relief? Do you practice alone or sometimes with friends? Your answers will guide every decorating decision you make. After all your yoga space should reflect your practice style.
Choose the Perfect Location in Your Home
Choose a space keeping the following aspects in mind.
- Sufficient natural light
- A quiet corner with minimal sound and visual distractions
- Consider space requirements for movement
- Good ventilation
- A location with positive energy flow
Balancing Functionality with Spiritual Ambiance
Ever noticed how a yoga session can transform your entire mood? There is a deep connection between our body and mind. It is often noticed that spiritual elements enhance one’s physical practice. It is because when you blend spiritual elements into your yoga practice, you are not simply working your muscles ; you are nurturing your entire being.
Creating a yoga space with meaningful spiritual elements is about thoughtfully incorporating symbols and practices that resonate with your authentic journey. A few such elements can be as follows:
Singing Bowl – It is a meditational tool. It creates a very calm, soothing, and lingering sound when struck by the wooden stick. The vibration in the air is ideal for meditation; creates positive energy and is a great stress reliever.
A soulful painting such as a painting of Lord Buddha in meditation, a painting of Kalpavriksha (the tree of enlightenment) can be enriching.
Any auspicious symbol or statue at the entrance of the yoga studio or room can be very welcoming. Many yoga studios decorate their lobby or reception area with such statues. E.g. a statue of laughing buddha, an elephant, statue of lord Ganesha – the symbol of wisdom, can create a positive vibe. A stone statue of Buddha, or that of devi Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, can also be considered. A diya (oil lamp) or candle on the corner table can be helpful.
Personalizing Your Space for Deeper Connection
Your yoga space is your sanctuary; the place where you connect with yourself on a deeper level. Think of it as your personal sanctuary within your sacred space. Create an environment that naturally pulls you into the present moment and opens doorways to deeper awareness. Do consider the following elements.
Indoor plants – they are living breathing partners in your spiritual practice. They literally transform the air quality in your yoga space, removing toxins and producing oxygen that enhances your breathing practices. Place plants thoughtfully around your space – near windows to filter light, in corners or at the entrance. The relationship between you, your plants, and your practice creates a beautiful cycle of nourishment.
Water your plants mindfully, making it part of your pre-practice ritual. This simple act of care extends your yoga beyond asana into everyday mindfulness.
Stone elements – like a small fountain with river rocks or crystal specimens. A small fountain with gentle water sound instantly calms the mind.
Natural textile and handicraft – Keep an Organic cotton or wool blanket for savasana. Use a Handwoven baskets to store props. Raw silk or cotton cushion covers will add vibrancy to the room.
Aroma therapy – You may choose your favourite essential oil and use it in an oil diffuser to have a calming effect during your yoga practice.
Creating a spiritually rich yoga space goes beyond aesthetics; it transforms your practice into a deeply meaningful journey. By understanding yoga’s spiritual roots, designing a sacred physical environment, and engaging all your senses, you can cultivate a space that nurtures both body and soul.
