This is a Palmleaf Painting with Story. It is based on the life story of lord
Ganesha. It has Panchamukhi Ganehsa at the centre. Surrounding him are the
stories of Ganesha Janmakatha (birth story of lord Ganesha) and several
miniature Ganesha.This is an intricately done painting having multiple levels,
each with a story. This level of intricacy can be done only by highly skilled
Chitrakars.
Since it is hand painted/etched using natural colours, sharp pen and brush on a
palm strip, there could be some inaccuracies, lack of symmetry and proportion,
colour mismatch or irregularities, and other aspects of human limitations.

Palmleaf painting is one of the distinct and most
ancient form of crafts in Odisha ,which have been continuously in existence for
more than thousand years. The canvas is made of strips of dried palm leaves.
Painting and etching on the palm leaf are done using organic colors. The themes
of Palmleaf painting are mainly taken from the epics and mythology like
Ramayana, Mahabharata and Gita Govind.
In modern times this amazing art has been kept
alive by the traditional Painter-community known as "Lipikaras” who live
in and around Raghurajpur village of Puri district in Odisha.
